MOVING MEMORY

Sofia Tula Coucouzeli-Moreira is a clinical psychologist, a dance & movement therapist, & a dancer. She sees her three professions as complementary in their creativity & approaches, whilst paying importance to the different frameworks they each hold. Having grown up with many identities & recognising the richness that can be found in these, she continues to find interdisciplinary intersections in her professional practices.

The theme Moving Memory resounds in all of her practices : movement being the changing of position, whether emotional, physical &/or creative, is present in psychology, in dance & movement therapy, & in dance. This capacity of changing position to see something differently, to nuance & open new readings of our narratives is central to the digestion of emotions, our growth, our adaptability & our vitality. She finds that the memories that are “stuck” (due to trauma for example) can be slowly processed through different channels of movement in our bodies. This can also be seen in her work as a dancer, where she places importance on the personal narratives of the performers.

Trained in Clinical Psychology from ULB (2021, Brussels), she studied dance theatre in parallel at Art-T, centre de Formation et Recherche en Arts de la Scène (2019, Brussels) & started her own dance & movement therapy practice, Moving Memory (2019-present day). As a performer, she's mainly focused on creating pieces that are community driven & with audience participation (In The Name of Plenty, 2022).
