DANCE MOVEMENT THERAPY

Dance movement therapy (DMT) links the emotional, cognitive, physical & creative selves. In DMT the unintentional expression through movement is fostered, which permits the enactment of unconscious ideas and emotions that may sometimes be difficult to verbalise. This expression of self through movement can help discharge psychological & corporal tensions while also help one become aware of their emotional resources and strengths.

The axes of this practice are: spontaneity & permission to play, working on our inner conflicts, our sense of freedom, reconnecting to our bodies, developing of an intimate connection with oneself & how we relate to others (the sessions will be held in a group setting).

More specifically we’ll work around sensory-motor perceptions to define the limits of our bodies, to be able to set limits, and to differentiate ourselves from our environment, as well as the symbolism that we contain within our body gestures and their expression. All of this work will stem from our own authentic movement. We’ll start by turning our attention to our breathing & touch, in order to calm our autonomous nervous systems. Starting by grounding oneself, we’ll begin exploring our emotions and the textures we contain within. How does the body keep all of its lived experiences inside? How does one process these through movement? The body being a living memory of one’s life, we’ll be exploring what arises through the movement of our narratives. We’ll venture into the crossing-over of the voice, touch and the body, with a ritualistic baseline, furthering our understanding of who we are and how we relate to the other.

The benefits of this workshop are the feeling of being more present in one’s physical and emotional body, work on one’s self-esteem, mental representations of oneself, and a sense of community.

Some info on Sofia Tula Coucouzeli Moreira & her dance & movement therapy practice history

Sofia’s an accredited Clinical Psychologist, who trained in dance theatre in parallel to her studies at Art-T, Artistic Research Centre, choreographing and creating her first emotional expression workshops. The focus on drawing from our own narrative in dance therapy has its roots in her dance theatre training as well as the importance she places on the subjective experience in her therapy practice.

She currently practices as a psychologist for PsyCol and has worked as a clinical psychologist in adult psychiatry at Clinique St Jean and CHU Brugmann, basing her practice on the psychoanalytic and systemic approach. These two complementary approaches help delve into one’s own past, reappropriating it, as well as understanding the connections one has with the world around them and how their identities are built. Within her practice, she places importance in increasing the degrees of freedom one may have in their life, through re-elaboration of their narrative, digesting their past, as well as their interconnectedness to others.

In the past she’s done dance therapy work with children who are in difficult family situations, as well as having held a weekly practice in movement therapy for the past 3 years with a public who has a psychiatric past. She has also held multiple dance therapy workshops in different dance practice spaces.

• TESTIMONIALS •

  • "Sofia creates a wonderful and safe space for everyone to explore. The first time I joined I was immediately surprised and relieved by how welcoming the environment is. I felt like there was no judgement at all and everyone could be themselves completely. There is space to reflect on certain elements in words but to keep silent as well, and both are fine. Through the movement I felt a huge release and softening. The given prompts are very helpful and allow you to be creative. At the same time, you're free to choose how much you want to engage with the exercise and take a step back if you feel like it. I think it's a beautiful practice for everyone - whether you're just looking to move through life with a bit more ease or for when you're going through some very difficult stuff."

  • "Sofia's dance therapy sessions allowed me to explore myself again through movements. Thoughtfully guided by Sofia, in a safe and honest environment, I found a way to tell thoughts, life events and everyday life's questions with my body"

A collab with Raffaele Sindoni.

Date and time : Sun, March 5, 2023, 8:00 PM – 10:00 PM EST

Location: Gather 952 State Street New Haven, CT 06511

An exploratory duo workshop for friends / partners. Discover new paths of companionship and togetherness through movement, voice, and touch.

  • What does it mean to meet someone you love with fresh eyes?

  • How do our dynamics reflect our own histories?

  • How do these histories interrelate and intertwine to construct the fabric & texture of our relationship?

Informed by dance movement therapy, clinical psychology, meditation, and tantra, this unique workshop brings together duos across New Haven to explore the textures and horizons of companionship.

Invite your (a) friend or (b) partner to a sensitive, somatic, and emotional evening at Gather East Rock. This workshop will use movement, breathwork, voice, & touch to pave new paths of togetherness. With guidance from two expert facilitators (Sofia [she/they] & Raffaele [he/they]), duos will be venture into new styles of communication, physical attunement, co-regulation.

Framework:

  • For friends and/or partners (2 people)

  • All relationship styles are welcome (queer, straight, monogamous, ENM, poly, friendship, hierarchical, non-heirarchy, etc.)

  • Facilitators will create a space of non-judgement & curiosity

  • All exercises are propositions. We believe that each person is an expert of their own body, and thus our propositions can be accepted or changed to what a participant or a duo may need in a given moment. Facilitators will always allow for these changes and adjustments.

  • Consensual interactions: All ways of engagement must be freely given, reversible, informed, enthusiastic, specific.

Facilitators:

Sofia & Raffa are partners who take great joy in co-creation & facilitation. They prioritise their capacities for softness and sensitivity all while being rooted in conviction and honesty.

Sofia (she/they) is a clinical psychologist, dance movement therapist (Moving Memory), and dance practicioner in Brussels, Belgium.
